Chana Bloch, poet, translator, and A&S alumna, dies at 77

The Department of Near Eastern Studies is deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of our distinguished alumna, the poet and translator Chana Bloch (Florence Faerstein), A&S Semitic Studies '61.

Chana Bloch was one of our first majors in what was then the Semetic Studies Department in the College of Arts & Sciences. She went on to get M.A. degrees in Judaic Studies and English Literature from Brandeis University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of California at Berkeley. Chana is Professor Emerita of English at Mills College.
