Overview
Fateme was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. She received her BA in Foreign Affairs with a concentration on the Middle East from the University of Virginia in 2022 and her MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago, where she was awarded the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in the field. Her master’s thesis, written under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen Cavanaugh, examined embodied and spatial forms of identity expression and resistance in Iran’s Evin Prison.
Her research interests center around the carceral structures of modern and contemporary Iran, the spatial and material dimensions of protest and social movements, and the mechanisms of governance and power. While her work is rooted in historical and theoretical approaches, she is also interested in policy implications of state violence and resistance in Iran and hopes to bridge conversations between academia and applied fields.
