Alumni Spotlight: Joanne Seiff '95

Joanne Seiff lives in Winnipeg and works as a freelance writer, editor and knitwear designer.  Her columns appear regularly on the CBC, as well as in two newspapers, the Vancouver Jewish Independent and Winnipeg’s Jewish Post & News. She earned master’s degrees in Education and Religious Studies after graduating from Cornell and has taught high school, undergraduate, graduate, and adult education students. She’s also the author of several books, including a collection of her newspaper columns, From the Outside In, and books on fiber arts, sustainability and community: Knit Green and Fiber Gathering.

When Joanne isn’t working, she’s wrangling her twin boys and bird dogs.  She’s married to a Cornellian who works as a Professor of Biology.  She’s grateful for multiple world perspectives she was offered in the NES department, particularly with Ross Brann and Parviz Morewedge.  She continues that exploration in Winnipeg by actively participating in a Muslim Jewish dialogue group. Many thanks go to Nava Scharf, who gave her a strong grounding in Hebrew.  That language training helped enormously in doing Religious Studies graduate work.

Thank you to Cornell’s NES department for such a great and rigorous education.
